While almost all car manufacturers have their eyes set on electric vehicles, Honda has set ambitious targets for its own lineup of vehicles
While almost all car manufacturers have their eyes set on electric vehicles, Honda has set ambitious targets for its own lineup of vehicles. Indeed, the Japanese manufacturer wants to electrify two thirds of its fleet by 2030, and one of the first models that will emerge thanks to this commitment will be the 2018 Honda Clarity.
Unveiled at the New York International Auto Show a few weeks ago, the Honda Clarity is truly a unique model.
Honda Clarity: electric or hydrogen?
The Honda Clarity is certainly one of a kind. To begin with, the new Clarity will be proposed with a hydrogen-powered electric motor. Canadian consumers will not get the hydrogen technology at this time, nor will we have the 100% electric engine also available in the Clarity range. That said, we will get a model that is much more suited to the reality of Canadian drivers, the 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid, or PHEV.
“The Honda Clarity is aimed at accelerating the deployment of advanced electrified powertrain technology and bringing electrified vehicles further into the mainstream,” said Jean Marc Leclerc, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Honda Canada. “The Plug-In Hybrid coming to Canada later this year represents a no compromise alternative fuel vehicle that meet the needs our Canadian customers today while building the foundation of an electrified future.”
Almost 70 kilometers of range in the 2018 Honda Clarity
The Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid that will be launched in Canada later this year will be powered by an electric motor with 181 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque. This engine will be paired with a 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine that serves as a generator to power the 17-kWh battery connected to the electric motor. In practical terms, this means that you get 68 kilometers of range in electric mode, but you can travel up to 530 kilometers without any worry.
And if you need to go further, just fill the fuel tank and continue on your way. On the other hand, since the majority of consumers travel less than 68 kilometers every day, it will be possible to carry out the vast majority of our daily commute without consuming a single drop of fuel. Better yet, it is possible to recharge the battery in just 2.5 hours with a 240 volt outlet.
The Honda Clarity therefore offers the best of both worlds! To find out more, come learn more about the new Clarity at Bathurst Honda!
